Pawmestry: the art of reading toe beans

Pawmestry: the art of reading toe beans

Cats have a wide variety of personalities and this trend in Japan is taking a stab at predicting them!
Called “Nekteso,” the art of reading cats’ paws was created by a Japanese author called Akatsuki. He developed five main personality types with even more subtypes based on our feline friends’ toe beans (that’s internet speak for the squishy little pads on our kitties’ feet).

Let’s go through the main five types. Be sure to have your kitty’s jelly beans close by!

Type A: heart shaped middle pad

Type A cats have a divot in their middle paw pad that resembles a heart shape. These kitties love to cuddle! They are lovable and friendly with their humans and have a special penchant for food (but don’t tell them we said that…)

Type B: rounded middle pad

Type B cats have a rounded top to their middle toe pad. These cats are loved by everyone and are very outgoing. They do well living with many kitty siblings, but aren’t big on snuggling with humans. But the good news is that they are so polite that they’ll probably put up with your affection!

Type C: Flat topped middle pad

Type C cats have a flat middle toe bean. They are shy, especially with strangers, and like to be the only cat in their home. Perhaps due to their reserved and proper demeanor, they tend to be very photogenic! Your phone is surely filled with glamour shots of these furry little models.

Type D: Less pronounced version of Type C

Type D cats have a bit of a more subtle flat top than Type C cats. These kitties are the stereotypical aloof creatures we all know from media and personal experience! You’ll have to work hard to earn their respect.

Type E: Triangular paw

To be honest, we aren’t sure where Mr. Akatsuki was going with this one… But apparently there are some cats with triangular shaped pads. It’s said that these cats are quite nutty! Maybe they are too busy bouncing off the walls for us to snap photos of their triangles…

That’s the five types you need to know about! What do you think about pawmestry? Does your cat’s paws match up with its personality traits, or do you think this trend is better left to the psychics? Regardless of whether or not pawmestry is accurate, cats can have all sorts of different personalities and we at the Cat Connection love them all dearly!

If you can read Japanese, check out Akatsuki-san’s book here. But if you don’t speak Japanese, fear not! There is another great read called Pawmestry: Unlocking the Secrets of the Universe with Cats by Megan Lynn Kott. You can buy it here.
