Cats have long been the subject of all forms of art. When I think of cats, one of the first images that comes to mind are those of ancient Egypt. In the past and present, and I’m sure even in the future, cats are regarded highly and revered by many. And it is no wonder that they are, for cats are creatures with an air of mystery and regality constantly surrounding them.
Perhaps this is why writers throughout the ages have found themselves drawn to the aura of cats. As a writer myself, this is something that I have been thinking about more and more often. What is this fascination that writers seem to have with cats? I have come to realize that it might be because in many ways, the stereotypes of both writers and cats are quite close. When talking about both, the descriptions of “solitary” or “mysterious” may come to mind. For both writers and cats, these descriptions may or may not ring true. It certainly depends. But perhaps that allure is this similarity of perception; a sense of a kindred spirit. Maybe it is simply that as writers, we see cats as reflections of some of the pieces of our own souls.
There are many authors that have cats, and hold them in high regard. Some of these authors include Sylvia Plath, Mark Twain, Jorge Luis Borges, and Ernest Hemingway. All of these authors are not only extremely influential, they were also cat lovers. This was something that many did not shy away from in their writing. Mark Twain famously wrote, “If man could be crossed with the cat, it would improve man, but it would deteriorate the cat.” As many had before him, Twain clearly puts cats on a pedestal. Jorge Luis Borges seems to reflect a similar sentiment of cats in his poem, “To a Cat”, where he writes, “You belong to another time. You are lord/of a place bounded like a dream.” It is clear that among the writing community, cats seem to be held in high regard.
All of our cats are beautiful and mysterious creatures, who are deserving of so much love.
In the spirit of thinking about writers and their cats, I myself was compelled to look at our very own cats at The Cat Connection, and see who has the potential to be an awesome writing companion. The simple answer is… All of them!! All of our cats are beautiful and mysterious creatures, who are deserving of so much love.
So, whether you are a writer or not, cats have been loyal companions of ours for centuries. I hope you’ll consider adopting one of your own here at The Cat Connection!
